Tensions flared in Ondo State as protesters stormed the office of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in Alagbaka, Akure, following the killing of five farmers by suspected armed herdsmen.

The unrest comes in the wake of a series of violent attacks, with multiple fatalities recorded earlier this month in a reprisal attack on four communities in Akure North Local Government Area.

According to the protesters, the latest victims were shot dead on Wednesday morning in Aba Oyinbo, Akure North.

In a dramatic display of anger and grief, they brought the bodies of the slain farmers to the governor’s office, demanding justice.

According to the protesters, the state government has failed to curb incessant killings, kidnappings, and other violent crimes, showing little commitment to addressing the deteriorating security situation.

Displaying the bodies of the slain farmers, they vowed not to leave until the governor personally addressed them and assured them of concrete security measures.

The attack, they noted, followed a similar assault just two weeks ago, in which 20 farmers were killed in four farm settlements within the same local government area.

The protest also extended to Ogbese, where demonstrators barricaded the Akure-Owo highway, leaving motorists and commuters stranded for several hours.

Addressing the protesters, Ondo State Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami reassured them that the government was committed to ending killings and kidnappings in the state.

He reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property, stating that new security measures were being implemented to strengthen the state’s security framework.

The state government has directed the State Security Network Agency, Amotekun, to establish a security post in the Ademekun community to restore peace and order,” Adelami announced.

Condemning the attack and the unlawful killings, he assured that those responsible would be brought to justice.

He further disclosed that the state government would hold a closed-door meeting with ten representatives from the affected community to develop a concrete plan for addressing security concerns.

Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi also engaged with the protesters, stating that law enforcement was actively working to apprehend the perpetrators.

“The police will not allow miscreants to take the law into their hands,” Afolabi declared, assuring residents that security agencies were intensifying efforts to restore peace in the region.
